Chorus Of The Saved [Devotional]

CCLI Song Number: 7027770. Devotional by songwriter Trevor Hodge, October 2015.

I’ve sometimes heard people say that as we gather and celebrate as a church, that we are in some ways ‘rehearsing’ for heaven - that we’re doing in a little, temporal and flawed way what we’ll be doing in a much grander scale for all eternity.  While this is a wonderful image and a very important truth, the writer of Hebrews seems to think that it’s even more than this!

In a real and profound way, as we gather around Jesus in our churches, we join with and participate in the ‘main event’! Jesus - the only true ‘worship leader’ - calls us to approach the throne of grace with boldness (Heb 4:16).

And as we worship together on earth, we do so as those who have already “come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God (the heavenly Jerusalem), to myriads of angels in festive gathering, to the assembly of the firstborn whose names have been written in heaven, to God who is the Judge of all, to the spirits of righteous people made perfect, to Jesus (mediator of a new covenant), and to the sprinkled blood, which says better things than the blood of Abel” (Heb 12:22-23).

We don’t just anticipate the worship of eternity...we join it! That should radically change how we approach our church gatherings.  Whether our church gatherings are formal or free flowing, intimate or overflowing, we need to remember that what we see, hear and experience is, in reality, part of something far bigger and more beautiful than we might initially be conscious of.  As Jonathan Edwards put it, “The church on earth ought to join with the saints in heaven in their employment, as God hath joined them in one society by his grace”.

So come join the song - in earth and heaven voices raised - in the chorus of the saved!
